Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularrus) are a small insect which are approximately 3-8mm in length.  Although they have small wing plates they cannot fly, preferring to stay in close proximity to the host (person).  Over the last few years reported cases of infestations have increased.  One of the reasons for this is believed to be linked to people travelling long haul to more exotic holiday locations.

People assume that bed bug infestations are caused by poor housekeeping.  This is not always the case although good hygiene within the environment can identify the infestation quicker so control measures can be implemented faster.

Characteristics of bed bugs include:

Length:  3-8 mm

Colour: Rusty red

Wings: Undeveloped (cannot fly)

Habitat: Close proximity to preferred host (person).  Although they do not live on the person, they will walk on to the person to feed.  Common harbourages are mattresses, headboards, behind peeling wallpaper, cracks and crevices, under carpets, light switches, behind picture frames and mirrors, and inside electrical appliances (stereos, alarm clocks etc.).  However, the insect is easily transported in clothing so can be found in all locations of an infested property.

Movement: Walks/distributed around properties (in laundry and clothing).

If not treated, the numbers will increase in size dramatically in a very short space of time.  A female bed bug can produce over 300 eggs over a number of months.  Upon feeding, bites will start to appear on the host and if not treated, infection can occur, and in extreme cases can cause septicaemia (blood poisoning).
Control measures include sprays, dusting treatments and thermal degradation treatments.  If you believe you have an issue with bed bugs, please contact us for more information.
