There are several types of fleas common to the UK, the most common of which is cat or dog flea (Ctenocephalides felis/canis).

General characteristics of fleas include:

Length:  2-3mm

Colour: Brown to black

Wings: None

Habitat: In the wild, fleas can be found in leaf litter and under bushes.  One of the main points of infestation are from family pets bringing them on site after moving through infested leaf litter and undergrowth.

Movement: Prefers to hop and leap onto host.

Fleas can cause a number of health issues not only to people but to pets.  Fleas need to feed on a host before they lay their eggs.  These bites are an irritant and can, if scratched, become infected and in severe cases cause septicaemia (blood poisoning).

Treatments can include spray treatments and fogging treatments depending on the location of the infestation.

It is important that your pets are treated for fleas on a regular basis as directed by your vet.
